  古代对日作战时称日本为倭：～奴。～寇。～刀。

• 倭 [wēi]，古同“逶”，逶迤。

  “倭遲”同“「逶」迤” 路迂曲貌，形容顺着迂回弯曲的道路行进

倭 [wō]，“倭”在日文中同“大和”一样都发音为“yamato”，“大和”为日本国的别名，“倭”字起初并没有贬义。7世纪后半叶（中国唐朝时期），倭国对外国号修正为日本。元明天皇治世时，规定以「和」字替代「倭」字，并以开头附以「大」而始称「大和」。天武天皇因喜欢道教而使用“天皇”作为君主的尊号，并且当时小野妹子出使隋朝为了获得和隋的平等地位而用“天皇”一词称呼本国君主，此说法尚有争议。

  指元末到明中叶（13-16世纪）多次在朝鲜和我国沿海抢劫骚扰的日本强盗，抗日战争时期也称日本侵略者为倭寇。
