禾本科针茅属(Stipa)的通称。多年生密丛禾草。叶片通常内卷。顶生圆锥花序，小穗含1花，脱节于颖之上，具尖锐的基盘，基盘上具向上的髭毛，颖近等长，外稃顶端长而膝曲的芒。颖果。约100种，多生于干燥温带地区。我国有10多种，常成为草原上的优势种或建群种，它们具有旱生结构，如叶面积缩小、叶片内卷、气孔下陷、机械组织与保护组织发达。主要分布在欧洲，中亚，西伯利亚及中国新疆、内蒙古等地。是上等的造纸原料。
