曹娥江为绍兴市最大河流之一,发源于金华市磐安县尖公岭,流经新昌、嵊州、上虞,在绍兴县新三江闸以下注入杭州湾,流域面积6046平方公里,涉及绍兴、杭州、金华、台州、宁波等5市。上游四大支流:澄潭江、新昌江、长乐江、黄泽江, 先后在嵊县城关附近会合。曹娥江干流(自嵊县东桥始),旧时按流经县域分段命名,嵊县段称剡溪;上虞段(含姚江)在今百官龙山以上称舜江,上虞龙山以下至三江口,俗称前海,其北,俗称后海,即今杭州湾。民国始,统称自嵊县城关至入海口为曹娥江。
