中国佛教的一个重要派别。要求修行时静坐敛心，止息杂念，认为这样持之以恒即能达到某种神秘境界。相传南朝宋末天竺（古印度）僧菩提达摩来华传经时创立。至唐代分为南北两派，南宗主张顿悟，北宗主张渐悟。后南宗顿悟说盛行，对宋明理学有很大的影响。

  1. 佛教宗派名。又名佛心宗或心宗，以 印度 菩提达摩 为初祖。禅宗之名称始于 唐 代。由 达摩 而 慧可 、 僧璨 、 道信 ，至第五世 弘忍 门下，分成北方 神秀 的渐悟说和南方 慧能 的顿悟说两宗。但后世唯南方顿悟说盛行，主张不立文字，直指人心，顿悟成佛。禅宗兴起后，流行日广，影响及于 宋 明 理学。
